I had to laugh today; Euan’s only being going to the nursery class of his school for a week and he’s already been invited to his first school disco! Ah, but it did bring back memories of school discos when I was at school (but not when I was just 3 years old!)
Good news though, Euan’s had his place accepted at the infant and junior school, so we don’t have to worry about filling in any more school application forms for a few years now.
Well, after having had a few days of quiet at work as things have slowly picked up from the Christmas holidays, things have just exploded today. But I had a nice surprise yesterday as I saw a posting regarding this blog on the connexions blog (thanks Richard!). As a result I’ve had two new visitors who have left comments, which is nice (may even get a bass trombonist for our band out of it!).
As I said to oz_cyclist I never know what to put up on here, but then that’s the fun of it really as you never really know what your going to find when you read someone’s blog.
Hmm, well, last night’s rehearsal didn’t go too well. It started late which didn’t help, but was partially my fault as I had a rush on to get various forms and monies before turning up.
We ran through the first 2 movements of Edward Gregson’s Partita that we’ll be playing in the Brass Band Championship regional qualifiers in Stevenage in March. This went quite well considering we hadn’t played it for a while. In the second half we played some of the stuff for the entertainment contest in Milton Keynes in February, this was very disappointing as we’d done these quite well last week. I overplayed and blew my lips out on the opening number, got through the second, but it all went to pot on the third and 4th pieces. We’ll really have to work on accurate dynamics for the next couple of weeks! And I’ll have to try and improve my endurance too.
And as if to make matters worse, just as I thought I’d got all the players sorted out for the contest it turns out that most of our trombone section can’t make it for the Milton Keynes contest! Well Mike does have a good excuse, he can hardly turn down a gig with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra can he?
Fortunately we have a new trombone player about to transfer to the band so hopefully we can get leniency to get his transfer through in time. Here’s hoping…
BBC NEWS | Actor Nighy for Hitchhiker’s film
Cool! I’ve always been a fan of the Hitchhiker series and since seeing Bill Nighy in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet in 2002 and State of Play in 2003 I’ve been a fan of his too. I think he’d make an excellent Slartibartfast, with that unmistakable twitch and tone of voice that he uses.

BBC NEWS | US airforce drops practice bomb
Looks like we’re not even safe from US friendly fire in the UK!
life of wiley : Upsaid journal
How about that? In a vain moment I did a Google search for “Life of Wiley” and came up with another blog that’s not my own! I hope Kristy doesn’t mind, not that I knew her’s existed when I titled this one.
Today was Trinity’s Covenant service. Will’s message was based on the reading from Deuteronomy 29:10-15 and emphasised the community aspect of the covenant. The words of the service make it an individualistic event, but Will stressed that although we make our own promises to God, we are doing it together in a spirit of togetherness.
Euan joined us from his Junior Church class for Communion and Louise and I were both very impressed with how well he behaved himself in the latter part of the service. It’s always a joy to share communion together. Euan had at least 3 biscuits after the service to make up for the fact that he missed out on the bread in communion:)
In other news, I was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief as I was able to swap my Feb 8th preaching appointment so that I can participate in a band contest, and I was also able to change the date of my guest appearance at Central Methodist Church, Dudley so that I can complete the CD recording that band are doing.
Well lots of stuff today:
The in-laws went home after looking after Euan for us whilst we were at work on Wednesday and Thursday. As Louise has just said, it’s nice when they’re here but it’s always nice to have the house to ourselves again when they’ve gone.
I wrote that letter to the Watford Observer regarding the match day parking fiasco on New Year’s Day; have to wait until Thursday to see if it gets printed.
I had to submit “block dates” for the upcoming preaching plan and announced my sabbatical.
The blind centre have just told us that they wish to change the date of the concert to May 13th. This is a real problem for me as we’ll be having our new baby born around that date. It will be by Cesarean so we’ll get a definite date. I’m gutted because it now looks unlikely I’ll be debuting Buster Strikes Back with the band.
There are four of us in the Wiley family in Watford. There's me Greg, my wife Louise, our son Euan and our daughter Eva. There's also our cat Fundi. You'll find a bit more information on our about us page.
